Fort Bragg History
Named AfterPrivate First Class Roland L. Bragg
Fort Bragg, located near Fayetteville, North Carolina, is renowned as the Home of the Airborne and Special Operations. The installation was established on September 4, 1918, as Camp Bragg, primarily serving as a field artillery training center during World War I. It achieved permanent status as Fort Bragg in 1922. Throughout World War II, the base played a critical role, housing all five airborne divisions, including the 82nd Airborne Division, which became a permanent tenant in 1946. The 1952 addition of the Psychological Warfare Center further solidified its special operations legacy. In 2023, the base was briefly renamed Fort Liberty under federal legislation. However, in 2025, it was rededicated as Fort Bragg to honor World War II hero Pfc. Roland L. Bragg. Pfc. Bragg earned the Silver Star for capturing a German ambulance to rescue wounded comrades during the Battle of the Bulge. Today, the installation remains a premier power projection platform and one of the largest military complexes in the world.
